Maarten Stekelenburg out of Netherlands squad

Roma goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg has decided to withdraw from the Netherlands squad for the upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers at home against Moldova on October 7 and away versus Sweden four days later. The shot stopper sustained... a head injury in his side's scoreless Serie A draw against Inter back in September and has been out of action since. Stekelenburg resumed training action last week, but eventually missed the 3-1 Serie A win over Atalanta as the head injury caused him problems again.

He underwent further examination in his native country on Monday and has consequently opted to return to Roma in order to fully recover rather than join up with the national side. Stekelenburg has not played since being diagnosed with head and neck trauma after the Sept. 17 collision with Inter Milan defender Lucio.
Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm is expected to take Stekelenburg’s place in goal when the Netherlands takes on Moldova in Rotterdam on Friday and Sweden four days later in Solna. The World Cup runner-up Netherlands is also missing playmaker Wesley Sneijder, who is recovering from a groin injury.
